Audio content is not a new concept; long before the internet existed, various individuals have been producing content for the ears and senses for who knows how long. In recent years, however, audio content creation has experienced a significant surge in popularity, as people have come to realize the convenience of consuming content simply by listening. This realization can be attributed to the fact that in this fast-paced society, people have begun seeking a source of respite while involuntarily immersing themselves in the world’s hustle and bustle. Thus, this article will explore the currently most consumed forms of audio content creation.

Immersive sound

Immersive sound is something that you might closely associate with movies and a movie theater’s surround sound feature. Before, it was only available for the big screen, but now that technology has advanced, it is accessible through a simple search on YouTube and a good pair of earphones, or better, headphones. The day ASMR artists were able to utilize equipment that allowed their audience a more immersive experience was the same day they began producing audio content with more immersive sounds than ever. 

Some of the more commonly known ASMR categories are 3D audio, binaural beats, and spatial audio. While immersive sound is also used in video games, AR, and VR applications, ASMR audios main focus is to cater specifically to the ears.

Podcasts

Podcasts have recently become more popular because of the power of influencers, YouTubers, and motivational speakers. These internet personalities often find themselves limited to producing short-form content to build a solid following, which restricts the topics they want to discuss and the things they want to say. Thus, they turn to creating podcast channels to:

  • Further expand the topics they’ve already introduced in their respective platforms
  • Branch out from the branding they already established, wanting to try something new. 

 

This form of audio content works in their favor as well because while some opt to include visuals when recording their podcast episodes, it’s not really required. With the lack of footage to record or edit, it becomes much easier to produce. Podcast trends tend to vary, but the most common genres are:

Audiobooks

What began as an alternative learning tool for the blind in the 1930s has evolved into a medium for easier content consumption. In recent years, publishing companies have recognized the decline in physical book sales and decided to turn to audiobooks, offering their customers a new way to consume their favorite authors’ published works. While it could be said that producing audiobooks requires more resources, thus costing more than just advertising the physical copy, you shouldn’t underestimate the gravitational pull that convenience has on current consumers. This type of audio content emphasizes the ability of voice actors and/or actresses to deliver their lines with such emotion and passion that the audience can visualize a scene unfolding before them, even when listening to the audiobook. 

Some people trade in their radio jams during extreme traffic for audiobooks because they’re a different, more engaging source of entertainment. It’s a unique means of storytelling that tells an engaging plot and features dynamic characters, without requiring you to take your eyes off the road. They advertise these audiobooks through short audio clips, coupled with immersive visuals, on various platforms that promote short-form content.
